This ambitious film tackles the difficult issue of India's partition in 1947, focusing on the microcosm of the Viceroy's house, and a Montague and Capulet-style romance between Muslim Jeet and Hindu Aaila (Manish Dayal and Huma Qureshi). Hugh Bonneville stars as Lord Mountbatten alongside a decidedly memsahibish Edwina, portrayed by the wonderful Gillian Anderson in this vivid and watchable period drama. Despite its stellar cast and sumptuous sets and costumes, the issues feel somewhat diluted and sanitized into a starchy, stuffy, "Downtonesque" piece which fails to engage or challenge.
