Two Streatham Hill men tried to buy gun off undercover police officer in Clapham Tesco car par

Two men have been convicted after trying to buy a gun off an undercover police officer in a Tesco car park.

Tyrone Richards, 22, and 24-year-old Kayvon Banton were covertly filmed in the undercover officer’s car as they agreed to buy a Glock 17.

Banton, of Daysbrook Road in Streatham Hill, counted out cash in the car on July 13 last year as he and Richards, of Saxby Road in Streatham Hill, agreed to purchase the firearm.

Moments later the two men were arrested in the Clapham South Tesco car park.

Peter Bailey, 17, was the person who first made contact with the undercover officer, saying he would arrange for the purchase of the gun.

Meeting in the car park of a McDonald’s in Catford, Bailey, of Lower Ham Road in Kingston, arranged to receive a cut of the profit for bringing in Richards and Banton.

The three criminals appeared at Woolwich Crown Court where Bailey pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess a prohibited firearm and ammunition, and to possessing ecstasy.

Banton and Richards were found guilty after a trial, with Richards claiming he was only trying to buy a gun so he could then inform the police.

London Crown Prosecution Service reviewing lawyer Susanne Alavi said: “These three men fully expected to walk away having negotiated the sale of a lethal weapon.

“The CPS, together with the police, put forward a strong prosecution case involving the analysis of voice recordings of previous tip-off calls Richards claimed to have made, leading to these verdicts.”

Richards was found guilty of conspiracy to possess a prohibited firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life and to possession of ecstasy.

Banton was found guilty of conspiracy to possess a prohibited firearm and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess ammunition.
