The trade union of London builders issued a ban on wearing beards to representatives of this profession due to "violation of safety at the workplace." Thus, the employees of Mears, working at the Tower Hamlets construction site, were announced to shave their beards so that the dustproof masks fit more tightly to the face. In this case, the company allows facial hair to employees, on condition that it does not interfere with the mask.
"This is a very delicate problem, which contains cultural, religious and personal nuances. This requirement should be approached carefully, and be not just directed from above," - says Mark Sowes, one of the union's workers. According to him, this approach is cheap, but in the end it will cost a lot. At the same time, the construction company holds another opinion.
This is what the director of security and safety of Mears Mark Elkington commented: "There is a simple and understandable fact: no dust mask can work effectively if it does fit tightly to the skin of the face. Both beard and just bristle are an obstacle to wearing a mask, which means they pose a threat to the safety of builders."
