Ice cream outlets hit London's Richmond Row, more eateries coming soon

The scream for ice cream on Richmond Row is growing louder.

Two new shops, Haven’s Creamery and Roli Poli, opened this spring in time for the summer surge, joining three other competitors — Marble Slab Creamery and two frozen yogurt shops — YoYo’s and Chil.

Both of the new shops are owned and operated by women who recently moved from Calgary.

Karri Egan was born and raised in London but has lived in Calgary for the past 20 years.

She opened Roli Poli at 484 Richmond St. in May, jumping on the fast-growing popularity of hand-rolled ice cream, a trend that originated in Thailand.

Egan uses an exclusive liquid ice cream base and pours it on a cold pan. “It’s made right in front of you, fresh to order, minute by minute,” said Egan.

Haven’s Creamery is owned and operated by Alana Coughlin, a Calgary native and classically-trained chef who operated catering and food truck businesses.

Her husband is a London native and pilot, and the couple moved here after his base of operation moved from Calgary to Toronto.

On April 29 she opened Haven’s Creamery at 226 Piccadilly St., just off Richmond Street.

Coughlin said her ice cream is handmade on-site with cream delivered from Hewitt’s Dairy in Hagersville.

“It’s simple, hard ice cream that’s made with lots of love and labour,” said Coughlin.

Coughlin believes there is room for five ice cream and yogurt shops on Richmond Row because each outlet is a little different.

Richmond Row is also welcoming some new eateries.

Fresno’s - The Italian Table is opening later this month at 581 Richmond St. It’s the latest venture from Kirk and Victor Anastasiadis who also run the Barking Frog and Burger Burger, a few blocks north on Richmond Street.

This time they have taken on an Italian partner with solid credentials — Tony Turquassio, who co-founded Hot Italian Sandwiches on York Street back in 2009.

Italian veal sandwiches will be a feature on the menu along with fresh-made pasta.

They will also add to the ice cream selection by offering Italian-style gelato.

A few doors down Dos Tacos, a new Mexican eatery at 611 Richmond, is set to open soon.

Meanwhile a major renovation project is almost complete at the former Mongolian Grill at 645 Richmond St.
