Remember That Kilburn Pub Which Was Wrongly Demolished? They've Started Rebuilding It Brick-By-Brick

Any lover of the traditional London boozer will remember spitting out their pint back in April 2015, at the shock news that Kilburn's Carlton Tavern had been demolished by developers .

While the bulldozing of boozers at the hands of developers is hardly news in these parts, this story was different — the developers, CLTX, didn't have permission to demolish the pub, and it was eventually ruled that it had broken the law in doing so - informed londonist.

Eventually, CLTX was reordered to rebuild the pub brick-by-brick — a task they must complete by July 2018.

As of 3 August, it's been confirmed that workers are on site, clearing rubble and debris, before the rebuilding proper commences. As for that 'brick-by-brick' thing: salvageable materials will be used in the rebuild. So at least some of the original bricks will make up the Carlton Tavern 2.0.

Westminster City Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Public Realm, Daniel Astaire told Londonist: "This is a big step in our campaign to undo the damage caused by the illegal demolition of the Carlton Tavern.

"Westminster City Council has stood side by side with residents to demand that this pub should be rebuilt brick by brick and I look forward to seeing the Carlton Tavern standing once again.

"Today is a just reward for the work of all the local campaigners who have fought for this building to be restored. I hope our campaign sends a clear message to developers across the country that they cannot ride roughshod over the views of local communities."
