Train services into London 'often quicker than anywhere else in the country'

Trains connecting Britain's major towns and cities are up to four times slower outside the South East, according to new research.

Analysis of the quickest possible trains on 19 routes found that services from London travel at average speeds of 65-93mph, compared with just 20-60mph elsewhere - writes itv.

Passengers travelling from London Paddington to Reading cover a distance more than two-and-a-half times longer in 17 minutes' less time, at 93mph.

Here are the fastest train connections on 19 routes in Britain, according to Press Association analysis:

  • London Euston to Milton Keynes - 46 miles - 30 minutes - Fridays 9.10am - 92mph
  • London to Ashford - 50 miles - 46 minutes - Fridays 9.32am - 65mph
  • Leeds to York - 22 miles - 22 minutes - Fridays 9.08am - 60mph
  • Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly - 30 miles - 32 minutes - Fridays 9.12am - 56mph
  • Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street - 42 miles - 49 minutes - Fridays 10.30am - 51mph
  • Birmingham New Street to Coventry - 17 miles - 20 minutes - Fridays 8.30am - 51mph
  • Cardiff Central to Newport - 10 miles - 12 minutes - Fridays 10.05am - 50mph
  • Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly - 36 miles - 49 minutes - Fridays 8.24am - 44mph
