Everyone at Haringey is saddened to hear of the death of former councillor Nilgun Canver following an illness.
Nilgun, 59, was a St Ann’s ward councillor for 16 years and served as Cabinet Member for Environment - writes haringey London.
A dedicated community activist, Nilgun chaired the Green Lanes Strategy Group – working with local residents and businesses to improve the area.
She helped launch the Harringay Food Festival and led the charge against the blight of fixed odds gambling machines. Nilgun’s commitment to Green Lanes helped to transform the area into the bustling, vibrant neighbourhood it is today.
Haringey Council Leader Cllr Claire Kober said:
“Nilgun was a unique character, well known across the Harringay area. Always willing to play her part and stand up for what she believed in, Nilgun cared deeply about our borough and believed in the power of politics to improve people’s lives.”
In addition to her 16 years as a Haringey councillor, Nilgun served as UK delegate to the European Union Committee of the Regions and was an active member of Tottenham Labour Party and a founder and Chair of the Labour Friends of Turkey.
