Cabinet set to agree borough-wide PSPO for street drinking

New powers to tackle street drinking set to be agreed

The crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Brent is set to be given a boost with the introduction of new powers to combat street drinking on a borough-wide scale - writes Council of Brent.

The council’s Cabinet will, on Monday evening (September, 13), be asked to back a report recommending the introduction of a borough-wide Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle street drinking and the anti-social behaviour it causes across Brent.

This follows a successful pilot scheme earlier this year, where PSPOs were introduced in six areas in the borough known to be street drinking hotspots. A breach of a PSPO is a criminal offence and can carry a fine of up to £1,000.

If agreed, this will form part of a wider programme to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in the borough. Earlier this year, 12 additional police officers hit the borough’s streets after a Safer Brent scheme to increase the number of uniformed officers received the financial backing of Brent Council.

Cllr Tom Miller, Brent Council Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said:

“Our proposals to tackle alcohol-related anti-social behaviour follow the recent work we have been doing in improving our CCTV and getting more police on our streets, and underlines our commitment to make Brent a safer place for everyone.

“Through the introduction of this borough-wide PSPO, we will be strongly boosting our efforts to eradicate street drinking and anti-social behaviour in Brent, whilst ensuring that those who need help for substance abuse are given the support they need.

"This is just one part of our efforts to tackle crime and create a safer Brent for everyone. Working together with our partners in the Metropolitan Police, Safer Neighbourhood Teams and the community itself, I am confident we can create a borough that residents feel safe and protected in."
