Modern Community Neighbourhood Centre opening

Residents are set to reap the benefits of a brand new £2 million community neighbourhood centre which will open next month.

The Custom House and Canning Town Community Neighbourhood Centre, part of the rejuvenated Rathbone Market in Barking Road, will open its doors on Monday 11 September - writes Council of Newham.

Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, will mark the official opening by cutting a ribbon at 11am. He will be joined by the Deputy Mayor (Statutory) Councillor Ken Clark, Cabinet Member for Community Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Planning and Public Affairs.

The state of the art centre includes a range of community spaces that can be used by groups and organisations to showcase the wide range of initiatives and activities local residents can get involved in.

Screens will also be placed throughout the centre to inform people about the events taking place in the building and local community. A kitchen will also be available to enable people to cater for parties or events they hold at the new centre.

The Canning Town Library, currently opposite the market, will be relocated into the building. As well as the books, films and CDs available in the library, people will also have access to over six million titles through the London Library Consortium. This scheme enables libraries from across the capital to share items with each other.

Among the other facilities at the new centre will be studying and reading areas, facilities for self check-in and out of books, films and CDs loans, computers, free wifi, and public toilets including baby changing facilities.

It has taken around a year to transform the empty building on the market into a moden community neighbourhood centre which forms part of the council’s drive to help bring local people even closer together in order to build strong and cohesive communities.

As well as the ceremony to mark the opening of the centre, a special open day will also be held between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 16 September where residents will be able to see all of the facilities the centre has to offer.

Sir Robin said: “Community Neighbourhood centres play a key role in helping us to achieve our vision of strong and cohesive communities.

“This new centre will provide local residents, groups and organisations, the perfect facility to come together to find out more about getting invovled in their local area.

“I am delighted to see the work to develop a first class facility for the residents of Canning Town is about to bear fruit and I hope the local community use it to its full potential.”

Councillor Ken Clark said: “The new Canning Town Community Neighbourhood will provide local people with a first class modern facility to use and enjoy.

“Bringing all of the community neighbourhood activities and initiatives into one purpose built centre will help local people come together, meet new friends and get involved in their local area.

“This is a hugely exciting project and is part of our ambition to ensure our community centres are more than just libraries and are at the heart of the local area.”

The council is currently investigating possible future uses for the current Canning Town library building.

The opening of the new centre in Canning Town follows the unveiling of improved facilities at the East ham Community Neighbourhood Centre in July and the opening of an improved Community Neighbourhood Centre in Forest Gate in 2015.
