Latest Bexleyheath improvements update – Albion Road

The stretch of Albion Road between Highland Road and Gravel Hill will reopen to traffic in both directions, during Thursday 28 September.

All of the diversions currently in place will be lifted and the new carriageway will be open to traffic with a single lane in each direction. A temporary roundabout will be in place at the junction of Albion Road with Gravel Hill while improvement work continues. Drivers are reminded that the speed limit along this particular stretch of road is 30mph. - writes

Improvement works between Townley roundabout and Oaklands (by the bowling alley) continue to progress. Traffic travelling from Townley roundabout is now again able to make a right turn into Royal Oak Road (by the Premier Inn), as well as into and out of the Conservative Club and the new retirement apartments at Cardamon Court. Drivers are reminded that there remains no right turn when exiting from Royal Oak Road.

In early October construction will begin on Broadway (outside the Prince Albert), to replace the traffic light controlled junction at Gravel Hill/ Watling Street, with a roundabout. The aim is to improve traffic flow and speed up journey times. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane between Broadway and the Gravel Hill/Watling Street junction and will not be able to turn right onto Gravel Hill. The diversion route via Highland Road and Albion Road will be clearly signed.

Improvement work will also begin shortly on both of the roundabouts at Townley Road (by the library) and at Highland Road. These will be repositioned and rebuilt at a raised level so that ramps are created on approach to the new zebra crossings, slowing down traffic and ensuring pedestrians can cross safely. Traffic will be able to travel through these junctions as usual and access to the shopping centre will continue to be maintained. In mid/late October some night works will take place for surfacing works, during which some roads will need to be temporarily closed.

London Borough of Bexley apologises in advance for any inconvenience that may result during these improvements. We are working with local residents and businesses to minimise disruption. Drivers should take extra care while these temporary arrangements are in place.

The works are part of the final phase of the Bexleyheath Town Centre Revitalisation improvements, which started on Albion Road in January. They will help to ensure that Bexleyheath remains a vibrant town centre that continues to grow and are being managed by the Council and funded by Transport for London.
