"smart zebra" for pedestrians is tested

In southern London, "smart zebra" for pedestrians is tested. New LED marking warns drivers about the beginning of pedestrian moving by changing colors. The innovative solution was developed by Umbrellium in partnership with the insurance company Direct Line. To the surface of the road standard size plates are attached, outwardly resembling a usual zebra for pedestrians, but inside the plates LEDs are installed. As soon as the pedestrian takes the first step to the "smart zebra", it signals the drivers about this by bright light.

It should be noted that, according to statistics, about 20% of hitting pedestrians occur at pedestrian crossing. Quite often, accidents occur due to the fact that drivers did not notice the pedestrian due to the blocked view by large vehicles or the pedestrian crossed the road in the dark, when visibility is very limited. It is supposed that the "smart zebra" will help reduce the percentage of such accidents.
