New taxi-cabs on hybrid engines are ready to begin transportation of passengers in London. Six test cars appeared on the streets of the city, which became a pilot project within the overall strategy of replacing old diesel cabs with modern hybrid cars. Drivers who will drive the new generation cabs will collect data on the actual impact on the environment from auto emissions and analyze the status of the car charger network. As the executive director of the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) Chris Gubbey, every resident of the UK capital will feel the effect of new cabs on the environment, regardless of whether he will use them or not.
Recalling that the first concept of a new cab, TX5 appeared in late 2015. Outside, the car looks like a classic London cab, in black and with recognizable shapes. But under the hood, a 1.3-liter power-plant is installed instead of a diesel engine, which operates as a generator for a battery and an electric motor. On clean electric power the car can pass a distance of 110 kilometers, and with the help of a gasoline-plant, the mileage grows to 640 kilometers without recharging.
The interior of the car is also slightly changed. It now has 6 seats, onboard Wi-Fi for passengers, USB charging and a panoramic roof. On a large display of the on-board computer, information on the traffic situation and the points for recharging the car will be displayed. Also, it will have integrated applications of taxi services Gett, myTaxi and Kabbee, which will become a serious competition for Uber.
