For any local residents concerned about their sexual health there’s never been a better time to take some simple actions to put your mind at rest. The Council’s sexual health services have transformed in recent years, with new, easy and innovative ways to help people look after their own and their partner’s health.
Bexley’s dedicated sexual health website was introduced after feedback from some of Bexley’s younger residents, who informed the Council during a consultation that they were not always able to find the information they needed, when they needed it - writes bexley.gov.uk.
In 2015 a new and innovative home-sampling service to test for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) was launched online for Bexley residents aged 18 and over. Residents simply register for a kit to be delivered to their home. The kit contains simple instructions for residents to take the samples, which are then free posted to a lab. Residents receive their results discreetly in a text message just a few days later.
The website also offers support and advice, including information on where people under 25 can get free condoms and free emergency hormone contraception.
The number of local GPs that provide dedicated sexual health services has also increased. Seven practices throughout Bexley now offer advice, support and contraception. Residents don’t need to be registered with the practice and can simply call directly to make an appointment.
The rate of newly diagnosed STIs in the borough is one of the lowest across London. A recent report from Public Health England showed that there were 621 diagnoses per 100,000 residents in Bexley last year compared to the highest rate of 3,057 in Lambeth.
Cllr Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Environment and Leisure, said: “We recognise that people are different and will need different options according to their circumstances. In Bexley we have some of highest number of trained GPs offering sexual and reproductive health services in London, with a long history of supporting residents to look after their health and wellbeing. Each month more and more Bexley residents are using these services, including the website, as it’s so easy and convenient.
“We are currently running an online survey to gather as many opinions and experiences of our services as possible, so we can ensure we invest in services that meet the needs of everyone in the borough. It will only take a couple of minutes, so please make sure you have your say.”
The London Borough of Bexley has extended its Sexual Needs Assessment online survey untilFriday 27 October. Residents can use the survey on the Bexley Sexual Health website to share how and where in the Borough they get support and advice when it comes to their sexual health, and what improvements they may like to see.
