Leading the way on affordable housing

Almost three quarters of new homes built on major developments in Haringey are affordable, new figures reveal.

A total of 1,599 affordable homes (72 percent) have been built across more than 40 major schemes since 2011, smashing the council’s 40 percent target for affordable housing on these developments - writes haringey.gov.uk.

At Tottenham’s Hale Village – the borough’s largest development to date – 958 of new homes built are affordable, while at Isobel Place behind Tottenham Town Hall, all 109 homes are affordable. At Hornsey Depot, residents have moved in to 35 affordable homes already been built, while a total of 168 homes in the development will be affordable once construction is complete.

Between last April and March this year alone, more than 200 affordable homes were built in the borough, while Haringey’s long-term regeneration ambitions will see thousands more new quality affordable homes brought to the borough.

The figures were published in the council’s Authority Monitoring Report (AMR), which measures the effectiveness of local planning policies since 2011.

The report also shows that a total of 5,275 new homes have been built in total in Haringey since 2011 and a further 5,544 are already being built or have planning permission as the borough bids to tackle the housing crisis.

Cllr Alan Strickland, Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Planning said:

“It is a tremendous achievement to have delivered nearly three-quarters affordable housing on major developments in the borough, and underlines our commitment to ensuring that investment and regeneration in our borough is making a positive impact on the lives of people who live here.

“We’re committed to playing our part in tackling the housing crisis, helping local people to get a foot on the housing ladder and ensuring Haringey has the right mix of housing.”
