The 2019 Juno Awards are expected to generate big bucks in London, but the price tag to bring the national music awards to town isn’t exactly cheap.
London has to fork over $1.7 million — a fee paid only by the winning bidder — for which council agreed to chip in $500,000 - writes lfpress.com.
City taxpayers won’t be on the hook for the remaining $1.2 million, officials say.
So who’s paying it?
Chris Campbell, who chairs London’s host committee, said organizers have done their “due diligence.” He’s confident that provincial grants will cover the rest of the fee.
Another $400,000 is already wrapped up through the Celebrate Ontario Blockbuster grant, a special fund for “major one-time events.” Tourism London is putting in $50,000, too.
That leaves $750,000 yet to be funded.
“The remaining balance will be applied for at the proper time through the Ontario Music Fund,” Campbell said.
Those dollars are doled out through the Ontario Media Development Corp. (OMDC), a provincial agency. But applications aren’t open yet.
Last year, the corporation gave $750,000 to Ottawa for its Juno celebration. The corporation said it recognizes the cultural and economic significant of the Junos, and the benefits it brings to host cities in Ontario.
“Ontario is the music hub of Canada, so we are always delighted when the Juno Awards return to Ontario,” said Marina Adam, manager of the corporation’s Ontario Music Office, in a statement.
“The Junos are of paramount importance, particularly in terms of the positive economic and cultural impacts for the host city and the province.”
A core group from London’s Juno host committee, as well as Mayor Matt Brown, will attend the 2018 Juno Awards in Vancouver as part of an exchange, and to pick up tips for London’s turn next year, Campbell said. The Junos will be handed out March 17, 2019, at Budweiser Gardens. A week of festivities will precede the nationally televised show.
And though London companies and other private funders won’t be tapped for the bid fee, they’re already lining up to help support London’s awards show and the other events leading up to the big night. Corporate sponsors will be needed for the host committee budget — basically, operating dollars for the event.
“There has been an outpouring of response from people,” Campbell said.
