Village mourns teen killed in crash

A tight-knit community is mourning the loss of Avery Kernaghan, the 13-year-old killed in a weekend crash near Mt. Brydges that also critically injured her father.

Kernaghan was an avid figure skater with the Mt. Brydges Magic Blades, a club where her mother is a coach - writes lfpress.com.

Friends and teammates posted photos on social media in memory of Kernaghan, with one calling Saturday’s collision “an unthinkable tragedy.”

“Love you forever,” one person wrote.

“This is to honour a young skater taken way too soon,” another said.

The crash took place about 1:30p.m. Saturday, on Glendon Drive just south of Highway 402.

Kernaghan was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but she was pronounced dead.

Her father, 47-year-old Douglas Kernaghan, was airlifted to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

It hits close to home for police and other emergency workers in the area, said Const. Mark Thuss with Strathroy-Caradoc police.

“We’re a tight-knit community here.”

Glendon Drive was closed between Springwell Road and Parkhouse Drive for several hours on Saturday afternoon as investigators pieced together evidence in the crash.

That winding stretch of road on Glendon Drive is the same spot where a 26-year-old woman was killed in a brutal crash with a tractor-trailer last July.

“I wouldn’t necessarily call it a bad stretch of road. It’s unfortunate we’ve had several serious collisions in that area,”
