Leaders of the contest for the best kebab of Britain are determined

Restaurants, street benches and kebab vans in the UK can be found on every corner. Annually they compete in 16 categories, trying to show their superiority over competitors in the taste of kebabs, speed of delivery, quality of service, etc.

The sixth annual ceremony of awarding the best kebab restaurants will be held in London on Monday, March 12. Judges will determine the best kebab restaurants in every region of the UK, the best chefs and even the best van that offers this type of popular street food.

Residents of the UK themselves form a list of favorite kebab restaurants. This year it originally consisted of 5012 establishments, and after the vote, it was reduced to 153 finalists. And the restaurant, proposed by a member of parliament or the municipality, received additional points.

Contenders for the title of the best chef of the year are: Besnik Hajdari from the restaurant Javits Takeaway in Edinburgh. If Besnik wins, it will be his second award: in 2015, his establishment was recognized as the best kebab restaurant in Scotland. The nominee is opposed by last year's winner Mazlum Demir from Skewd Kitchen in Barnet, London, and Haci Akdogan from London's Haz Restaurant, who became the best chef in 2015.

Last year's winner from Northern Ireland - Sphinx from Glengormley in County Antrim - competes with other finalists, including the namesake from Belfast, who is also a two-time champion.

What is the point of the event?

The awarding ceremony will be held on Monday, March 12, in London. Winners will be announced after the final vote of the judges: politicians Baroness Warsi, Nadhim Zahawi, Jonathan Reynolds, Amjad Bashir and radio host Lucy Horobin.

Earlier, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and London mayor Sadiq Khan participated in the vote. The annual awards ceremony is considered to be the only event that emphasizes the contribution of the kebab industry to the UK economy: this product brings £2.8 billion a year, providing jobs for 200,000 restaurant employees and food vendors. This year, the money raised from the event will be donated to Sarcoma UK, a charitable organization that helps patients with cancer.

Did you know that?...

More than 1.3 million kebabs are sold in the UK every day. The very first kebab restaurant - Istanbul Restaurant in Soho was opened during the Second World War. Today in Great Britain there are 20 thousand kebab restaurants, which sell 2,500 tons of mutton and chicken each week. In the country there are 200 kebab restaurants with turnover of over £750 million.
