Sadiq Khan urges Londoners to report 'sexism and misogynistic attitudes'

Sadiq Khan is urging Londoners “to call out sexist and misogynistic attitudes” as he published a raft of measures designed to make the capital safer for women and girls.

The London mayor is promising £44million towards tackling a series of violent and abusive crimes including rape, harassment and female genital mutilation -writes

More funding will be made available for programmes to tackle stalking including a new Stalking Threat Assessment Centre, and there will be investment to expand a rehabilitation project to help reform the behaviour of perpetrators.

An extra £13million will also be ploughed into sexual violence services, and domestic violence services in the capital will receive a boost of £5million.

Latest crime statistics show on average 11 women and girls are raped or sexually assaulted in each of the capital’s 32 boroughs every week, while domestic abuse accounts for a tenth of all crime reported to the Met police.

The mayor said: “It is time for every Londoner to call out sexist and misogynistic attitudes wherever they encounter them – in the workplace, at school, on the streets or on public transport.

“My new strategy puts forward a comprehensive package of measures to intervene and prevent violence against women and girls, to tackle dangerous individuals who pose a risk in our communities, and to improve services for victims who have already suffered so much.

“I want every woman and girl to be safe and to feel safe wherever they are in our great city – and will use all the levers available to us at City Hall to make this a reality."
