Test for citizenship - Life in the UK Test

You can sign up for the Life test in the UK Test solely on the official website. This test is important for applying for a UK citizenship.

You need to register for the test at least 3 days before the desired date. The cost of the test is £50.

Today in the UK there are approximately 60 centers where you can take a test. Therefore, you can choose one of the 5 closest to your home centers.

If no center is located near your home, you will not be allowed to take the test and will not be returned the money. For testing, you must bring documents that prove your place of residence.

Prepare for the test

You will be checked for knowledge of information from the book Life in the United Kingdom A Guide For New Residents. Accordingly, to pass the test, you need to study this book. You will have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions about the traditions and customs of the UK.

Apply for a test

To register for the test, you will need:

the e-mail address;

debit or credit card;

acceptable form of identity card.

What is an acceptable form of identity card?

To register for testing, you can use one of the following documents:

passport (it may even be overdue);

a UK driving license with your photo;

an exit document (usually a passport, a visa), a certificate of identity (CID) or a document of a stateless person (SPD);

identity card of a citizen of the European Union country;

a document confirming your immigration status;

biometric residence permit (BRP).

The name you specify when signing up for the Life in the UK Test must match exactly with the name on your ID.

You must specify your full name (middle name, if you have one) by signing up for the test. Otherwise, you will be denied the test and will not be refunded for it.

If you are disabled

While registering for testing, you can indicate in the form that you are disabled, and you need special equipment or help to get to the test center.

In which case you do not need to take the test

You do not need to take the test if you:

Are less than 18 or more than 65 years

you passed it earlier, for example, if you are applying now to become a citizen of the UK, and before that you took the test to settle in the country.

you suffer from prolonged physical or mental illness. In this case, you must provide a letter from the doctor confirming your condition.

What happens during testing

You will be given 45 minutes to answer 24 questions based on the book Life in the United Kingdom A Guide For New Residents. You cannot take children or other family members with you to the center.

What you can bring

You are required to take with you the identity card that you used when registered for the test.

In addition, you must bring along a document confirming your address, which indicates your name and postal code. It must be valid for 3 months after you pass the test. It can be:

bill for gas, electricity or water;

bill for payment of municipal tax;

a letter from Home Office with your name and address on it;

a UK driving license with your photo;

an bank statement on credit card.

If you take a statement from the bank with you, it must be the original document printed by your bank. If you do not normally receive such documents from the bank, ask the bank to give you such. The document should be stamped by the branch of the bank, by which it was issued.

If you do not bring all the necessary documents with you, you will not be allowed to take the test and will not be returned money for it.

If you pass the test successfully

To pass the test, you must score 75% or more.

You will receive a letter confirming that you passed the test ("pass notification letter"). You will have to send the original of this letter along with your application for citizenship to confirm the passing of the test.

You will receive only one copy of the letter and do not receive a replacement. If you lost the letter, call Home Office. You will not get a new letter, but you will be told what you can do.

If you fail the test

You must wait 7 days before trying to pass the test again, but you can take the test as many times as you want. Each time you need to re-register for testing and pay for it.

Cancellation, refund and complaints

If you cannot come to the test you signed up for, you need to cancel it. You can get your money back if you cancel the test 3 or more days before the test date.

How to cancel a test

log in to your account that you registered;

select "Confirmed tests";

select "Cancel tests".

If you have right for a refund because of the cancellation of the test, £50 will be returned to the card that you specified when signing up for testing. To do this, you do not need to contact the UK Visas and Immigration Service.

Registering for testing will be possible on another day.

How to ask for a refund

You can ask for a refund if the test was canceled by the center itself. No other excuse is valid for you to demand your money back. For example, if you took with you wrong identity card, were ill, late or took the wrong documents, they will not give you money back.

You must apply for a refund within 3 months from the date of the test.
